Dan Gilsdorf opened his tattoo studio in North Portland 17 years ago at a time when there were only nine other shops in town. Fast-forward nearly two decades and the number of parlors now hovers closer to 150.

Staffing those shops are hundreds of tattoo artists licensed by the state of Oregon. New regulations passed in 2013 by the Oregon Board of Body Art Practitioners requires that tattoo artists complete 10 hours of Continuing Education each year in order to keep current on their licenses.

Gilsdorf has taught classes on the art and history of tattooing and the physics and metallurgy of tattoos since 2013. These classes are popular with both artists and community members.

Gilsdorf draws in students as he’s well known and admired in the tattoo community. He specializes in bold work in the traditions of classic American and Japanese tattooing. He’s met, worked beside and been tattooed by renowned artists around the globe.

“We have a lot of fun in the classes and they are really interesting whether you are a tattoo artist or not, ” Gilsdorf said.

All trainers are certified by the American College of Sports Medicine.When Jesse Barksdale was 2 years old, he toddled into his family's living room with one arm covered in ink doodles and proudly declared: "Look, Mama! 'Toos!"

He was referring, of course, to tattoos, which he already had seen his uncle perform many times over at his tattoo shop.

By age 3, that uncle was letting Jesse draw "flash" — small tattoo designs typically displayed on tattoo shop walls or in binders to give tattoo customers ideas about what to get.

As in many states, Arizona's tattoo business is mostly unregulated. The law says it's illegal to tattoo a minor without a parent present, and the law goes on to forbid having a tattoo business in a home, using unsterilized equipment and administering anesthesia to give a tattoo.

And that's where it stops. There's no mention of any training or other requirements a person must meet before beginning to permanently inject ink under the skin of other people.

The point isn't lost on Jesse. He's been doing tattoos for three years now, and last summer he and his mom spent 12 weeks in Colorado at a tattoo school, earning Colorado tattoo credentials as evidence that they want to run their business right.

Both are passionate about maintaining a clean business with minimal risk of blood contamination. Everything they use is sterile and disposable. They are certified in blood-borne pathogens, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid. And they'd like to see the business in Arizona become more regulated.

In fact, Glatiolis was training as an artist when he fell into tattooing in Vernon, BC. He now has two shops; the other one in Red Deer, Alta.

Since Zimmerman made the introduction, Hardy has spent many nights at the shop and will spend a few more there in the weeks ahead. In addition to the Madonna and child and the Union Jack, he is planning a large tattoo on his back: an angel-themed portrait based on a photograph he took of his fiancée, Charlotte Riley, which will float above a rendering of the London skyline.

Lying on his back with his knees bent and spread apart, Hardy keeps busy while having the work done: he's on his BlackBerry, he's having a coffee, he's watching the 2009 movie

After more than an hour on the table, he hopped up, took a good look at himself in the mirror, and smiled. "That's a nice start, isn't it?"Born into a back-to-the-land artistic family, I grew up in rural Saskatchewan. I spent my childhood drawing and creating, fostering an imagination and artistic ability to fill the time and space in a somewhat isolated community. This grew into an education in the arts as I eventually earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Saskatoon. Soon after that, massive student loan debt and a willingness for adventure aimed me towards Taiwan. While there, I began getting tattooed by Taiwanese master Diau-An. He embodies all that I love about the tattoo world, a man who carries himself with dignity and pride; an astounding artist to say the least. This relationship acted as the catalyst and inspiration for me to pursue tattooing as a career.

Upon returning to Canada I began my attempt to find an apprenticeship. In a short time I was taken in by Art at Funhouse as shop-help; the position which is proving ground to edit out those not dedicated to what is soon to come. While there I met Jeremy and soon after he created Tattoo Union in 2008. It was here that I learned to tattoo. In 2013 I opened Paradigm Tattoo Company and had the privilege of working alongside Mikel (an inspirational tattooer in both his work and life) for approximately a year. Since then it's been me, a solo artist in a semi-private appointment based studio.

Now, numerous years later, what seemed like a long and convoluted path feels like a direct line from past to present. Each day I strive to get better, this is something Diau-An instilled in me. He was thirty years into his career and still spoke about learning each day. I take this job seriously, it envelops most aspects of my life and I constantly attempt to give my clients the energy which they deserve. I pride myself on being prepared and professional. Each tattoo that I produce is a representation of me and my capabilities. My concern is in producing quality artwork rather than a quantity of generic tattoos. I want to be proud of the work I create and I want my clients to be equally proud to wear it. I look forward to the coming years, the individuals I will meet and the artwork I will produce ... these are just two of the amazing benefits of this career as a tattoo artist.

ONEONTA — Gone are the days when getting inked meant only a blurry-edged anchor or an inexpert heart wrapped in the word “Mom.” A practice once seen as a statement of rebellion or reminiscence reserved for sailors, biker gangs and gawk-worthy exhibits at the carnival midway has become, instead, a matter of mainstream self-expression.

In a recently published Harris Poll, a survey of 2, 225 people showed that three in 10 Americans have a tattoo. Furthermore, of those with ink, seven in 10 go back for more. And the younger the adult, the more pervasive the ink; the same poll calculated that 47 percent of millennials have at least one tattoo, along with 36 percent of Gen-Xers.

And as tattoos have become more commonplace, the art form itself has been elevated. A century and a quarter after the first electric tattooing machine was developed and patented in 1891 (following the discovery of Thomas Edison’s designs for an “electric pen” from 25 years prior), today’s tattooing is highly precise, heavy on skill, and ever-evolving.

“Back in the day, the American standard of tattooing was different from other cultures, ” said Mike “Tombstone” Melli of The Body Alternative at 138 Main St. in Oneonta. “As time’s gone on, placement has become more important and people have really gotten away from the ‘cartoony, ’ older style. Today, people are more exploratory, they want more realism, more 3-D effects.”

Melli, who over the course of his career has inked an average of 4, 000 clients annually, said that, while the basic design of tattooing machines hasn’t strayed far from the 1891 prototype, the advancements in other facets of the industry have been recent and sweeping.

Years ago, tattoos were “simple designs with bold outlines, gray wash, black shade, some color and gaps of skin as a balance, because we were limited by colors of ink and styles of needles, ” Melli explained. But now, said Melli, “We have all these new styles of needles, we can do fat lines, fine lines, fades and shades. And we have much better inks; there’s been a lot of experimentation with pigments so we have longer-lasting colors, too.”

Melli took the tangential route into the industry, racking up five degrees (three in art), a turn as a cemetery statuary carver (hence the alias), a nine-year stint as a public school teacher and a spell as a fine artist before settling into tattooing at 30. Now 47, Melli, formerly of Long Island, is two years into his present post at the 138 Main St. parlor.

James Mcilroy of Golden Lotus Tattoo Studio at 75 Main St. in Oneonta echoed this sentiment, saying, “I am always trying to educate myself. Everyone is always pushing each other to do better. Our goal (as artists) is always to just kill it.”

Mcilroy recently attended a tattooing seminar with fellow Golden Lotus tattoo artist and shop owner Jason Sexton, something both credited with expanding and deepening their understanding of the craft. Sexton has been tattooing for 25 years and Mcilroy has been at the Golden Lotus, which opened in 2005, for six.

With a bachelor’s degree in art from the State University College at Oneonta, Mcilroy, the son of an artist and fashion designer, said he is always working on trying to better identify and define his own style. He mentioned that, as part of that, he has recently been doing a lot of painting.

Mcilroy said he likes paying homage to traditional American- and Japanese-style tattooing and has recently noticed a lot of sacred geometry patterns making their way into the tattoo world.

Asked about the changes he’s seen over his long career, Melli — who Body Alternative owner Greg Lee called “the best around” — said, “In the last 15 years the industry has just exploded, with new artists constantly pushing the envelope of styles and exploring new avenues.”
